Girish’s wanderlust sparked in his earliest days, fervently scribbling on his dad’s National Geographic magazines with a pen before he could even walk properly as a child.

Learning about the world in the late 80s and early 90s was very different from today’s instant access via the internet. But in sixth grade, Girish’s geography teacher, Miss Elizabeth Masters, showed them vivid images from library books, which sparked Girish’s passion to explore the world through his camera.

During college, while studying Physics and Software Engineering, Girish’s love for photography grew. After a brief stint in software development, he learned photography under Girish Mistry at Mumbai’s SHARI Academy.

During his time at the academy, Girish began to explore travel photography and writing articles, eventually seeing his work published in various magazines.

Yet, after five years, he realised sustaining solely on travel photography was challenging. Consequently, he diversified his expertise, exploring commercial photography genres like studio portraits and food photography to support his wanderlust.

Girish has led photography workshops and seminars at various colleges and schools, including IIT Bombay, Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies, Sophia College For Women, S.M. Shetty College, Anna Leela College, American School of Bombay, Witty International School, VIBGYOR (Mumbai and Pune), and Bishop’s School Pune. He has also conducted sessions for organisations like ICICI Foundation for Inclusive Growth, Kotak Mahindra Bank, and NABARD.

Additionally, he served as a visiting faculty at SNDT Women’s University in Mumbai, imparting skills in studio lighting for portraits, products, and food.

Insights from Girish Menon: Navigating the World of Photography

In photography, the real art lies in the mind, not just the camera. It’s more than just clicking a button. Beginners often fixate on finding the perfect camera, but it’s not the key. Only by taking pictures and understanding your subjects can you improve.

Social media acclaim doesn’t always reflect true skill. Many people don’t understand what makes a great photo or don’t take the time to learn. You can improve your photography knowledge and creative vision by studying the works of legendary photographers from the early days of the art form. Watch them discuss their work and vision on platforms like YouTube to gain valuable insights.

Learn the technical aspects from professionals, take lots of photos, and connect with photographers whose work you admire for valuable guidance and advice.

What can Girish Menon teach you about Photography?

Girish Menon’s simple three-step method:

Firstly, understand what message you want your image to convey to your audience. This guides your composition.
To spark your compositions, master lighting and camera placement for the best outcome.
Lastly, write a caption that tells more about the picture than what you can see.

By practicing photography daily, even with your phone, you’ll refine your skills.
